Martina Stanek naît le 2 août 1962 à Toronto, au Canada. Peu de temps après, ses parents s'installent en Californie où elle grandit. Passionnée très tôt par la photographie, elle suit les cours du Santa Monica Community College. Après ses études, elle travaille pour la Los Angeles Art Photographers Association (LAPA), où elle se fait remarquer pour ses photos intimistes prises dans les clubs de Hollywood et de Venice Beach Boardwalk et pour les portraits de ses amis.
Désirant découvrir le monde avec son appareil photo, elle parcourt les Etats-Unis et ses lieux mythiques, la Route 66, La Nouvelle-Orléans, Nashville, Memphis, New York, puis l'Europe. Particulièrement touchée par l'Irlande, qu'elle visitera à plusieurs reprises, elle photographie Cork, Dublin, Belfast.
En 1987, elle arrive en France, qu'elle ne quittera plus, s'installant à Paris où elle trouve sa place dans le milieu du photojournalisme. Elle travaille pour l'Agence Gamma, puis rejoint l'Agence France-Presse (AFP) en 1995, dont elle est chargée aujourd'hui des « demandes spéciales ».
Martina Stanek poursuit en parallèle une oeuvre personnelle et humaniste.
Martina Stanek was born on August 2nd, 1962 in Toronto, Canada. A short time later, her parents settled down in California where she grew up. Fascinated very early on by photography, starting classes in high school then continuing photography classes at Santa-Monica Community College. After her studies, she worked for the Los Angeles Art Photographers Association (LAPD). Martina's subjects at the time were her intimist photos taken in the clubs of Hollywood and portraits of the homeless/artists/musicians of Venice Beach Boardwalk.
Wishing to discover the world with her camera, she travelled the United States and the mythical Route 66, New Orleans, Nashville, Memphis, New York, then Europe. Particularly affected by Ireland, which she visited repeatedly, she photographed Cork, Dublin, Belfast.
In 1987, she arrived in France, which she never left, settling down in Paris where she found her place in the environment of photojournalism. She worked for the Gamma Agency, then joined the Agence France-Presse (AFP) in 1995, where she is today Special Photo Assignments Editor.
